Mary has been exploring a variety of color and black and white mediums throughout her 30+ years as an artist and art teacher. She has also produced artwork for the US Forest Service on various districts in the Pacific Northwest since 1992 as a summer seasonal and volunteer. She currently works as a naturalist/interpreter and artist at the Begich Boggs Visitors Center in Portage Valley, Alaska.
Mary’s main topic throughout her artwork, regardless of subject, has been the quality and intensity of light and light patterns. Creative and exploratory in her use of color, she often captures unique effects in her landscape paintings. Most of her work is based on direct observation. By embracing the dynamics of change, Mary leaves room for the “x” factor. The unexpected shift in light, the mosquito that wanders into and meets it’s demise on the canvas, or perhaps a gust of wind that changes the tenor of the atmosphere may all play a part in the final results.
Artwork created for the USDA Forest Serice may be viewed on the Naturalist & Interpreter page. Jewelry designs are presented on the Striking Matches page.
